lose yourself in the fantasy

Happy Wednesday and Happy November!! I hope everyone had a fantastic and safe Halloween! In Monday's post, I wrote about the importance of staying open-minded in order to be flexible. When you're flexible and have an open mind, it allows you to let go of the need to control external things happening around you so you can stay present in the moment.

When I was in my Groundlings class this past weekend, we focused a lot on setting a strong foundation for character work using different exercises and techniques to help us find specific details for our characters. Have you ever gotten lost in a beautiful day dream? There's something so incredible about the mind's ability to create beyond its own reality. To be able to create an entire alternate universe and life story for a character is truly amazing and some serious fun.

This past weekend at Groundlings, I let go of my individual self and got lost in the fantasy of the character's life I was creating. It was so much fun - getting swept away in the fantasy. The most important thing I realized, though, was that the character was an extension of me. She still looked like me and sounded like me, but she was a slightly altered version of me.

The character I created lived a pretty normal, drama-free life on a daily basis - a happy family life with a good job. But her secret was that she loved scuba diving. One day a month she'd get a personal day away from her husband and kids where she'd take off down the PCH to go scuba diving with her handsome instructor. Even my character was living out a fantasy!

And that's the whole point. Having day dreams and fantasies is important because it can break up the day-in and day-out routines of life, but it can also help you appreciate just how beautiful and special the mundane, little things really are. The little things in life add up to be the big things. Not everyday is scuba diving with a hot instructor, and if it were, that would become the mundane. The reason different things happening is exciting is because they are big, rare occurrences that only come to fruition because of the adding up of all the little things.

So appreciate the little things. They add up to be the big things. And lose yourself in the fantasy. You'll come back refreshed and ready to get back to the routine.
