kiss... keep it simple, stupid.

Happy Monday! Last week, I wrote two blog posts called “own your choices” and “take risks.” I also posted about the newest comedy sketch I was a part of with some friends of mine - “Olympic Curler (at home).” If you didn’t get a chance to read those posts or watch the video, please click the links above and check them out!

Do you ever find yourself feeling stuck? Maybe there’s something at work or in your personal life that just feels slightly off? We’ve all been there. That feeling of being stuck usually happens because of one of two things: either feeling like things should be some other way than they currently are or feeling like you’ve hit a plateau. If you can recognize that you’re feeling stuck for whatever reason, I have great news! You can get unstuck.

This all ties back into the idea of owning your choices and taking risks with a very simple truth attached to it. That truth is one that I have had come up in conversation over and over again with all different types of people in my life, including a few amazing women I enjoyed bonding with at an alumni event: If you want things to start working in your favor, you have to choose it. If there’s a situation in your life that you wish was different and is within your control, you can choose to either change the way you think about it or you can change your circumstances. It can be hard to change the circumstances surrounding a comfortable routine, but it is even harder to change a perspective that has become engrained in that same routine.

People often ask me how I wake up at 5 AM each day. I will admit that it isn’t always easy, especially after a late-night comedy gig, but it is as simple as this: I set my alarm, and when the alarm goes off, I get out of bed. That’s it. Now there are usually umpteen different reasons why I choose to get up at 5 AM everyday, but your motivations and finding your why is what makes a simple task easier.

Life can be messy and complicated. Things that are worth your time are hardly ever easy, but making small choices and adjustments day-in and day-out that challenge you to grow and to become the type of person you want to be are simple. If you want to find time to go to the gym more often, wake up a little earlier. If you want to eat healthier foods, start by changing one meal a day and then gradually cut out the rest of the unhealthy stuff. If you want to learn a new skill or instrument, set aside a chunk of time each day in order to learn.

The things I’m writing about here aren’t ground-breaking ideas. I’m not saying anything that hasn’t been said a million times before in a million different ways. Heck, Nike built an entire brand around “Just Do It.” And that’s what it all comes down to. Make simple choices that reflect where you want to be 5 or 10 years from now. I don’t have it all figured out, but I do know that excuses only hold you back. Fall in love with the process and embrace the unknown, but always work towards those big-picture goals.

Some people make it look really easy, but it’s not. It’s never easy; it’s just simple. Decide what you want, and don’t look back. A lot of my friends in the comedy world know I have this bit where every movie I see I give the same critique: "not enough smoochin'." Now, it's obviously a joke, but there is something about a kiss that is special - besides it being a lovely display of affection. KISS is an acronym for Keep It Simple Stupid. It's applies to smooching, but it also applies to life. Don't overthink it. Just do it. Your internal compass will steer you the right way if you let it.
