weigh the pros and cons

Happy Monday! And happy Eagles’ victory weekend! NFC Champs going to the Super Bowl, baby! Last week, prior to Friday’s video recap, I wrote two posts: “watch game tape” and “work with what you’ve got,” which were about learning from those further along than you and doing your best with what you have at any given moment, respectively. While I was watching the Eagles game last night with friends and other fans, I thought of something for today’s blog post that is very important to me: weighing pros and cons to make the best decision.

Have you ever been in a situation where you had to sacrifice something in order to gain something else? I’m not usually the type to make impulsive decisions. I tend to almost overthink things and rely on calculated risks in my decision-making. I like to try and think of all possible outcomes before arriving at a set conclusion.

The Eagles win, however, got me thinking about a time where I decided to throw caution to the wind. My third form year at boarding school the Eagles were in the Super Bowl against the Patriots (talk about deja vu). My boarding school hosted a school-wide watch in the student center where anyone was welcome to attend to watch the game. As a 3rd former, my check-in time was 10:15 PM. Now, being that my school was in the Northeast, there was no way the game was going to be finished by 10:15 PM.

On the one hand, I could continue my perfect record of no demerits and head back to watch the game in the basement common room. Or on the other hand, I could decide to take the demerit and watch on the big screen in the student center.

I don’t regret that demerit at all. To this day, I hate that the Eagles lost the Super Bowl back in 2005, but I am proud of my sole boarding school demerit. I got that mark on my record by committing to something I care about and to a team that I love.

Life is way too short to worry about having a perfect, squeaky clean record. Life is meant to be lived by weighing pros and cons, by taking calculated risks, by making mistakes, and by choosing to sacrifice perfection for passion and love.

This year the circumstances are different, so there’s no way I can get a demerit for a late check-in, but hopefully I can celebrate that demerit 13 years later with an Eagles Super Bowl victory and the ultimate Eagles-Patriots redemption. 39 might've gone to the Pats, but 52 is for the Birds.

Weigh the pros and cons, choose to live in the moment, and throw caution to the wind.... Oh, and Fly Eagles Fly.
