Thoughts

Although I would’ve told you at one point in my life that I was not a big Guy Ritchie fan, I am happy to say that I’ve grown up, seen the light, and my tastes have changed (mostly, barring one recent project I didn’t love that I will not mention). Yes, I did recently recommend Ritchie’s Netflix darling The Gentlemen, and yes, I am back and highly recommending his Paramount+ darling MobLand. Although it was startling at first to hear Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren speaking with Irish accents, I love how it felt like it heightened the amount of unhinged chaos the Harrigan family was already experiencing. I loved the casting for this show and think it really built a believable mob world. Casting Director Des Hamilton did an incredible job on these 10 episodes (Des, if you ever read this, I have a Masters in Theatre from Trinity College Dublin and would love to work on any project you cast).  Okay, enough of my shameless begging, though I do actually mean it!

MobLand isn’t always easy to watch as it is at times gory and violent (it’s a crime drama after all), and the characters aren’t always likeable, which I really love because it’s like real life. Listen, I know I have some days where I’m basically a gremlin because I’ve not had my coffee or I’ve eaten after midnight… or gotten too much sun… or someone soaked me with water or something.

But the instances that make MobLand at times difficult as a viewer have nothing to do with a weak script or poor performances – the scripts, as well as the performances, are all incredibly strong, frequently clever, and always intentional - basically a Guy Ritchie show! If you want a show that will keep you asking, “but what happens next??” then MobLand is definitely for you. Totally BingeReady.
