Watch The Last Frontier for some fun entertainment. It’s not a documentary so expect some inaccurate police procedures, as well as some plot holes, but if you loved Con Air, think of it as Con Air set in rural Alaska with more in-depth storytelling and some big twists! Also, the casting, especially of the various prisoners, is fantastic, and it's from the creator of The Black List, which I loved, so I imagine it will only get better as time goes on!

Synopsis

When a lone U.S. Marshal’s jurisdiction is turned upside down after a prison transport plane crashes in the remote wilderness, setting free dozens of violent inmates, he begins to suspect the crash was not an accident.

Thoughts

I’ll level with you. It’s hard to think of a show to recommend given last week’s recommendation, but I’m really enjoying The Last Frontier. Is it perfect? No. Is it entertaining? Yes. And that’s what non-documentary television is supposed to be: entertainment, baby.

I love the premise of this show, which is basically Con Air but set in rugged, unforgiving Alaska. Speaking of unforgiving, I’ll never forgive anyone for canceling the Lakers show after only two seasons; we, the audience, were robbed. All that being said, I’m glad I stumbled across The Last Frontier, though, because it’s got Jason Clarke! And I love him in this role as U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick. He's got a personal life that’s been through the ringer and is just about to turn the corner into Happyville when a plane crash of violent criminals lands in his backyard. Talk about raising the stakes. He was so close to a happy retirement in a cabin with his wife, and now he’s got to hunt down Dominic Cooper and Johnny Knoxville and Rusty Schwimmer and a whole slew of other criminals.

The plot thickens, though, because as information begins to pile up, it seems that the plane crash wasn’t an accident, that there’s a larger, potential cover-up in the works, and that Frank was chosen for a reason (don’t worry – this is not a spoiler and not kept secret past episode one). Each new episode brings new information, as well as new prisoner storylines, so it’s been fun to watch each week (really reminiscent of The Black List in this respect). I particularly enjoy shows where not everything is quite what it seems, and I would definitely label The Last Frontier as that type of show. If you can get past some of the wonky dialogue and the frustration at the choices teenagers make, which is easy to do for this show, I think you’ll like it! Totally BingeReady.
