Your Weekend Binge Watch: Woman of the Hour

With a big holiday weekend coming up, it's time for Your Weekend Binge Watch. Since I think everyone deserves some (assumedly) much-needed time off, I wanted to recommend a film for this weekend instead of a series, so without further ado, I present Your Weekend Binge Watch: Woman of the Hour.

Binge watch Woman of the Hour this weekend for Anna Kendrick's directorial debut, edge-of-your-seat tension building, and outstanding acting performances all around.

Synopsis

In 1970s Los Angeles, as a wave of murders makes headlines, an aspiring actress crosses paths with a serial killer during an episode of "The Dating Game," a dating show in which one lucky contestant asks a series of questions to three unseen candidates to win a date and, hopefully, a chance at love.

Thoughts

Given the limited knowledge I had going into this watch based on a couple trailers I'd seen, I knew I was at least slightly interested in the story. That being said, this movie was a master class on how to build tension. This based-on-a-true-story film opens with intent and purpose and never looks back. Anna Kendrick plays Sheryl, an aspiring actress who, although auditioning, isn't booking, so out of desperation, accepts a gig on the popular show "The Dating Game." The movie shows us Sheryl's experience on the show in its entirety while cutting in and out to flashes of grisly murders (done tastefully without showing too much) at the hands of a serial killer -- who happens to be one of the contestants whom Sheryl might end up dating. Daniel Zovatto's performance of serial killer Rodney hits all the right notes; he's equal parts charming and unsettling, and the casting directors* on the film deserve all the credit for casting him. Without getting into spoilers, I'll just say that this film is worth every single second of its 95 minute run-time. Your Weekend Binge Watch: Woman of the Hour is totally BingeReady.

*Bret Howe & Mary Vernieu cast this film (incredibly, I might add).
